 Summary:
Can iMovie import MP4 for editing? Why fail to import MP4 to iMovie? If you encounter can't import mp4 into iMovie, simply refer to the following explanation and solution.

Situations in can't import mp4 into imovie

l  I got some wonderful video of my new baby girl on the camcorder (Canon HFM500) I received for the holidays. But the video is in an mp4, and iMovie won't import it. I love working with iMovie because it's so user friendly for computer idiots like me, but I need it to work with my new camcorder! Can anyone please, please help me?

l  For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos. Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960. For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format. They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto). When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.

l  Handbrake ripped a personal video to .mp4 format. iMovie doesn't recognize this file when I browse to import. Is there a work around?

l  I had VHS-C tapes converted to DVD recently. I want to edit the video using iMovie. When I open the DVD there all the files and one folder which I assume is the movie and contents (Video_TS). I used Handbrake to do whatever Handbrake does and now my video is in MPEG-4 file format. I should be able to import this format into iMovie, but iMovie doesn't recognize it.
I've gone over and over this and just can't get the video to iMovie to edit.

l  Imovie is letting me import some .mp4 files but not others….specifically those I created from Handbrake.

Why iMovie won't import MP4?

Though iMovie announced to import MP4 files, it only imports MP4 video specially encoded for Apple. However, MP4 is a container video format, some MP4 file (like MPEG-4 files ripped from DVD by Handbrake) may contain number of audio, video, and even subtitle and still images, which is not compatible with iMovie.
